Tuscan terracotta from Impruneta, Italy, crafted to withstand frost

Terracotta from Tuscany

In Tuscany, about 20 km south of Florence, the small town of Impruneta is world-famous for its clay. The clay is extracted from the nearby Greve and Ema valleys, enriched by the waters of the Arno river. It is from this clay that the finest terracotta pieces are made, capable of withstanding even harsh frost.

A Traditional Workshop...

This same clay was used for building the famous dome of Florence by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi.

Today, Mario Mariani’s workshop is one of the last three to make ceramics following ancestral traditions: the antique “Colombino” or “Posteggiatura” method, which involves turning (throwing) the vase while walking around it rather than spinning it.

Tuscany in Your Gardens...

The wood firing can last up to 75 hours. The terracotta pieces are then immersed in water for half an hour to give them their incomparable hardness. It is all of Tuscany that comes to life here. And in your gardens, tomorrow
